Veterinarians think size matters! We house call veterinarians see many giant breeds. Examples are Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and today a very handsome Leonberger. Over 110 pounds qualifies as a giant breed. In 2012, 343 pounds was the record for the weight record for a dog. Zorba, an English Mastiff from the U.K. measured 8 feet long.

These giant breeds have unique characteristics. They require more space, exercise and age more rapidly than smaller  breeds. Skeletal issues are the most common medical problem and require more veterinarian attention.

In the case of Luke, a Leonberger, we carefully differentiated the couch from the dog. Clients do not appreciate when veterinarians vaccinate their couch.
