In 1982 we started out in a Datsun with a box.Then we moved up to a very special mobile vehicle that preformed only about half as well as we did...especially on ice and in traffic. We sold it to a Florida veterinarian.Then we moved on to our Subaru and have been coming to you since then. We are visiting you and folks in about 20 other towns. Since the last decade, several major investment companies have tried our model and failed miserably. Mostly, these failures have resulted from poor customer service. We do have a secret formula: JAN. Our nurse is special and clients realize this. We want to thank her for her amazing devotion and service.

Should we have one or not?

Possibly the photo alone supplies one reason for a pet bed. If the pet is obese or arthritic, the bed is a great idea. As a veterinarian who has removed part of a bed from a pet's stomach and intestine, the decision must be based on the pet.Excessive moisture on the bed, either from panting or urinary leakage is another reason to avoid the continual series of beds and replaced beds. I always go back to the wise old father of all Veterinarians , Dr. McRuffins ( no such vet): A Dog is not a human!

Should I get some puppies?

The owning of several pets is ludicrous, which is why we do it.Ours are dachshunds and Goldens. These guys are clients' pets. But the rule still stands. Pets take time several times a day.

We have two friends saying .....Hi!
Actually, these are sisters. They have no use for a paw shake, so butt sniffs will have to do. But there is some straight forward stuff to be done about rude behavior. For example, with poop eating ( quite common), pick up stools quickly and keep pets at a distance from each other until they've relieved themselves.

We have had Yorkies as pets, and we see tons ate ANIMAL HOUSE CALLS!

The Yorkshire Terrier is a petite breed. Little maintenance is needed with Yorkies. Plus...they are kinda nice. Biting can usually be controlled. They tend to bond well with their human caretakers. Orthopedic issues as well as tracheal conditions are not uncommon.If you are indeed unlucky, one may raise a yorkie with serious liver shunt disease. Any toy breed oe even miniature breed does come with potential medical issues.
Nevertheless, the Yorkie makes a fine pet.

Some new patients have been seen of the smaller variety

At Animal House Calls, we have examined and treated pets from ounces in weight to over 225 pounds. Recently we checked in on a foster situation with Yorkshire Terriers galore.
I know....abandoned Yorkees? Why?
Well....cute pets may out stay their initial cuteness. All the pets we purchase or adopt will require a lot of work, love and patience. The foster family we recently met has a great deal of these virtues.More urgently, these folks need future adopters. PALS is a cat shelter above all others!

At Animal House Calls, we speak rarely of other Veterinarians, breeders or shelters. Why? Because we are really busy. But....Peabody Animal Life Savers in Salem is a fine and cautious feline shelter. We have been working with them on a weekly basis for close to a decade. These folks don't just love cats. Anyone can do that! The folks at PALS help care and place them on a full time basis.

Why? Maybe because they are elderly, not easily maintained by owners or of unusual facial features.

Although many Veterinary facilities do not provide grooming services for cats, we see it as a necessity for certain pedigrees and have provided it since the early 80s.....Wow!

There are no averse influences of different eye colors. In fact, this guy seems even more aware of life due to the bright distinct white coloration the right eye.

Wow! This has been a busy summer!

King George is a very alert little King. He is saying: Wow! Animal House Calls has had its busiest summer in 43 years. In essence, our House Call Veterinary practice is 40% busier than last year. So same Vet,.....of course same nurse/practice admin. We are a tad more discerning as to call volume however. We may delay new clients or not venture beyond our practice area. Today we quickly excised a previously hard to visualize mouth tumor. Owners who elect to have us do a dental also benefit by a pet mouth exam to visualize and remove suspect lesions like this one.

Biopsys can reveal any real danger from a mouth tumor. These tend to be serious in cats and dogs.

Really, really busy.

Animal House Calls must adjust to a new era of veterinary medicine! We are losing vets daily in the field...retiring or leaving the practice of Vet. Medicine.But not here at AHC!

Barney wears a cloak to aid with the itch!

The patients we see have a myriad of problems. Barney is a severe inflammatory dermatitis.The medications that we prescribe are helpful and the skin cover is an added prevention from self excoriation.Less itch and an inability to scratch the lesions which erupt occasionally has minimized further problems. Frankly, we think Barney loves his new wardrobe.

We find at Animal House Calls that some of our feline friends can't lick their butt! Ok.. never seemed a relevant athletic endeavor for your pet?Nevertheless, body maintenance has become a problem for some of our elder and plumper cat patients. We at Animal House Calls need to worry about hair coat issues and matts because cats with poorly groomed coats develop sores as well as parasitic problems, and some of the less fortunates may even develop matts so massive that the cat can neither pee nor poop. Wow, and some say cats have easy lives?

Lets face it, rabbits and horses don't look very similar!
Nurse Jan loves them both, but we only include rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets together with dogs and cats in Animal House Calls' practice.

Maintenance of pet hygiene, nails, teeth and skin health are the three issues as well as gastrointestinal health that are most central to a rabbit's happiness.

Shelter pet or Pedigree?

Decisions on pet acquisition fall where family size and material possessions decisions fall. Owners are the last ones who decide whether to adopt a pedigree or shelter pet.We at Animal House Calls visit shelters, rescues and pure breed pets. This little guy is a popular little breed, King Charles Cavalier Spaniel.
During Covid shut downs, we saw many shelter pets. In these inbetween times, we are again examining breeders pets as well as many kittens and puppies who need homes.

Does this pet need a bed?

For reasons related to our love for our pets, we give them pet beds.Here is an idea as to how large these beds can actually be.Keep in mind that the soldier statue is more than 3 feet tall!
For arthritic pets, insecure pets and even for pets who are being trained to restrict their presence to specific areas, beds are a great idea.Always avoid parts of the apparatus that can be chewed up and swallowed.

Or.. how to prevent self excoriation by a kitty?

Many of our canine and feline patients suffer with summer skin allergy. This newly acquired pet has Feline Ulcerative Dermatitis. This is a common feline dermatitis of uncertain cause as well as a myriad group of treatments. The ability of this client to position the cat shirt around the cat's skin is very helpful.
What the client can bring to the table is beneficial to the patient!

The official smallest Animal House Call Teacup Maltese

This new patient is unable to be weighed on our standard scale. Recall that this is a 13 week old puppy, not a new born puppy. This pup is house trained and responds to his name. The only unusual characteristics related to " Kitt" is size and great demeanor. Kitt is a teacup Maltese.These guys tend to have knee issues as well as anesthetic related problems, but are great pets. This is a great subbed for cautious and dedicated families with handling skills needed for a toy or teacup breed.

Labs replaced them everyone.

We are Golden as well as Dachshund owners, but where have all the Goldens gone?
We do see quite a few, but not like 5, 10 or 20 years ago. Remember that Animal House Calls has been through Sharpei days, ferret days and even the days of Grey Hounds from the track.Now we are fully into adopt strays from the south days ( Yeah!) and get a Labrador retreiver days.
The Goldens have always been wonderful pets, as is one of our newest patients, seen here, embarrassed by a submissive peeing episode.The breed has been hard to find, and has had a rather significant uptick in cancer diagnosis. The Lab is another great breed although highly susceptible to ACL injury and skin allergy.
We love both breeds. They are human attachment dogs and that is what we are all about!

Some of our human base instincts!

Some of the adopted pets which we can expect to examine up north have had their ears removed to serve as bait dogs.These very unfortunate dogs have ears removed so the pets can continue to act as bait for fighting dogs without immediately being subject to quick blood loss and dismemberment from simple ear trauma. This is a sad reflection of the base instinct of some very inhumane folks.

Does nursing even matter at Animal House Calls?

Our Nurse, at Animal House Calls has actually graduated high school.

At many animal facilities, and even in some clinics, there are nurses who are inexperienced or newbies.At Animal House Calls, our nurse has worked with animals since before Carter. Yeah, actually President Carter! In fact, she probably learned a lot even before that guy was our commander in chief.One thing is for sure, she is way better with people than the doctor, and probably better with the pets as well. In fact, the doctor thinks she knows black magic. If so, that would ensure a way better plan than even medicine alone might provide.

Do not fear snow!

Similar to the human staff at Animal House Calls, we can understand that dogs and cats ( in an enclosed area) enjoy being outdoors during chilly weather.There must be access to shelter....in other words, let older pets in when they have finished their adventure. Also, be cautious of icy conditions with arthritic pets. Exercise is as lacking among pets as it has become among the owners!

Or Why WE Love Bathrooms?

WE love seeing our feline patients, but notice I say "seeing" and not "chasing" .
In order for the cats, owners and Veterinary team to all get together in one place, we see our feline pets in the bathroom as a general rule.This is of course not my original brainstorm. Nope, it is the idea of a famous previous line of home visit vets back when cats were "worshiped" pets in ancient Egypt.
..... Nah, you got me! It's our idea and a really good one. So put a bit of their favorite cat food there as well as some Taylor Swift tunes and we will do our Vet work there.

To avoid these guys, simply do not feed them. They look really happy and quite plump because that is exactly what is happening. They are fed with bird feed daily, and boy are they aggressive to this visiting house call vet.

Dermatology problems require skin exam and lab tests.

This small 2 and half pound new adopted pet itches continuously. Often in puppies, mange and flea are the culprits. After a cursory exam and the absence of obvious flea debris, we sent off lab material to test for mange as well as ringworm.
Our lab is a strictly veterinary laboratory and works like a charm.

We actually have examined these birds, although not this sexy chicken.

The strutting and weird hairdo.. not that common among our patients or the Animal House Calls vet. or nurse. But who can really compete with this guy? I am going out on a limb... but I do think it's a guy!
We actually examined some of these birds last year. Town and city health departments often require health checks by veterinarians for agricultural animals and pets. Believe it or not... the chicken is not a " small animal" but a member of agricultural stock!

Some of our cute patients are poorly adapted for vision, breathing or running.

This kitty is cute as the dickens, but not a candidate for a really long jog or a very hot day! We love mini dachshunds, but I would not take one for a jog. So, when we buy, adopt or give our lives to an adored pet, remember its biology. Great big slobbering hairy dogs are better in New Hampshire than in Miami. The patient here is a house cat...in a house with AC!

The two headed Bernese Mountain Dog Case!

These two(not actually one) are some of our cutest puppies this year. They are about 10 months apart in age. Often we have found that dogs are in fact happier and perhaps warmer if they sit on top of each other like this smaller puppy does.This breed has been quite popular in our practice during covid, but the lab is still the most popular breed in the country.

Frenchies are cute and not great in the hot weather.

The french have taken over America's popular breeds!

The Labrador was king for years, but apparently a quick trip through millennial world in Boston's North End reveals that the French ( Bull Dogs) have now taken over. These are adorable and cute alternatives to those large family breeds
( Golden, Labrador or Shepherd), but these are not hiking, running or beach going companions...at least not according to Animal House Call criteria. The French Bulls have overheating and other respiratory predispositions. These pets need love, attention and soon..AC!

Our most popular breeds!Based on the client vote. Dachshunds ( one of our favs would never make it!)

Ok.. we are cheating by choosing a puppy. But the labrador retreiver is a really good selection, perhaps with slightly more orthopedic issues, but less skin allergies than a golden retreiver. They both have a tendency to eat too much, but they are not chunky beagle at least. ( We actually love beagles.)
We select pets based on temperament, but acknowledge that a giant breed like a newfoundland will have a far shorter life than a poodle.

Snow and moisture help no wrinkles!

This patient loves rubbing its folds in the snow. These folds maintain moisture within a warm environment, and this leads to a dermatitis. We call this issue " Lip Fold Dermatitis". Veterinarians have great descriptive titles for the weird things we see. Best advice is keep the loose and folklike skin dry and medicated as needed to prevent irritations and uncomfortable pets. If needed, we can add in antibiotics and ancillary treatment.

What will your pet eat by mistake?

Look, we know that that is Biscuit sprawled in her bed. She is not sick but merely a lazy old Dachsi! Look at her belly! we do!
What makes it so rotund? Is it Christmas tinsel? Is it your nieces new sweater? Is it the poops from her litter mate... a little kitten?Or is it simply too much Hills senior diet?
But what if she had just eaten a light bulb, or a poinsettia, or a box of chocolate????
Solution ..... maintain some sort of control over your pets: Use a cage... or a spare room or simply keep them away from scraps or the wrappings from Christmas presents. Let us face it that a lot of life is keeping everything in control and under surveillance. So, at Christmas and Hanukkah and thru out the holiday season...... carefully watch what you're pet is exposed to!

Gussie has been adopted by one of our new clients.

Gussie has already adopted well to his family. When pets like Gus adopt well to their family and primary human companion, they excrete higher levels of oxytocin. So do their owners. This hormone is the "cuddle"hormone which decreases our base level blood pressure and decreases our heart rate. Oxytocin is mutually excreted and reaches optimum levels among mutually happy pets and companions!

Finley looks great and lives with a kitten with ringworm. Ringworm is actually a skin fungal infection, commonly transmitted to humans.

Bailey is now doing well with anti fungal medication, although Finley has had very few to minimal lesions. It may be immunological skin type or actual bacterial and fungal flora of each pet's skin that makes a difference in who shows up with skin inflammation.
Maybe we are just lucky that such a cute cat like Finley has lost none of his glamor!

If unsure, then culture it!

Today, we saw Bailey who is a newly adopted kitty with skin irritation of recent duration. Bailey scratches intermittently and has hair loss adjacent to his ears. When a diagnosis is not obvious, we generally culture the hair or skin for fungal infections, or other bacterial causes which are usually best first identified before treatment.

Coco senses that we are a bit different during Covid.

Coco is a wonderful Lab who loves to be around people. Often when Animal House Calls visits her, she communes with her chewy toy..... one of several.Our patients, like Coco and even our own family animals are very intuitive and sensitive to human moods.
During Covid 19, we have noticed an uptick in anxiety among canine patients. Many of our clients are home more and are eating at different times or otherwise acting in a manner that varies from their regular routine.Depending on your schedule change, mood change and of course wardrobe change ( masks), pets may actually realize that something has changed. Coco also lost her house mate recently, so the recent few months has not been easy. Her human family has helped her with these transitions.

Even during this horrific pandemic, folks need a certain habit or addictive behavior to support their daily grind. Some of our clients, like these two younger clients need a golden. The need to pat, cuddle or otherwise torment this benign creature are characteristic human flaws which usually signal a call for help. Unfortunately, the condition is very tough to treat.

Labs are officially our most commonly examined breed among the canines we see at Animal House Calls Mobile Veterinary Clinic.

We find that this breed often over eats, and loves chow time. This may appear cute, and leads to attractive yet plump dogs which may later suffer from orthopedic issues like ACL tears and hind end deterioration, especially hip dysplasia.
We have many dietary suggestions as well as behavioral ideas on how to slim down these adorable but overweight dogs.

Two can be better than one.

Today we boosted vaccines on two buddies, Here is Ebony. Her buddy Koby also was seen. We have a soft spot for beagles. This hunting breed ( hunt?) is great as a family dog. For a pure breed dog, they are not as afflicted with congenital problems as many of our breeds that we see. These guys were adopted as rescues anyways and that is a great service we can provide to these pets, especially at this difficult time.

Kiss your pet only if you like germs!

OK....they are very cute, but we do not kiss them.
We wash our hands after handling them, especially if we are making food.
We do not feed them raw food, allowing them to transmit E.coli and other bacteria to us or younger and older humans. We do not consider them sources of COVID 19.
We do discuss the corona virus Pandemic with them continuously, but they have shed no light on easy fixes.

What is this lump under my lower eye lid?

At Animal House Calls Mobile Veterinary Clinic , a cherry eye is a common sight. This enlargement of a gland in the conjunctival area of a dog's eye is no cause for alarm. Often a simple surgery is performed to remove or alleviate the enlarged tissue.A side effect can be dry eye, another common condition in canine patients. Toby has already developed dry eye as well as the cherry eye enlargement, so that side effect would not be a problem. An alternative treatment is to leave the gland and treat the eye for chronic inflammatory conjunctivitis. Toby is adorable and 14 years old. Often with seniors , we leave the surgery as a second choice and treat conservatively.

Pet grooming avoids dermatitis and late diagnosis.

Animal House Calls Veterinary Clinic checks out Dusty, a long haired breed feline with a monthly visit. When a pet tends to groom poorly on its own, it is a wise intervention to assure no obvious lesions are missed under what quickly becomes a gnarled and messy coat.
The undercoat as well as the area near the backend requires self grooming, and frankly Dusty ain't into it. Although this kitty does stick out his tongue,I want to believe Dusty believes we are trying to help him be the long haired beauty his owner wants him to be.

Coco here is one of our more intelligent and cautious patients. With younger puppies, we must be sure to eliminate small pieces of plastic, buttons,eye pieces, sharp corners and always chewable objects and materials. These can cause obstructions as well as mouth irritations and lacerations. It is a rare occasion that we ever see Coco without her favorite " bunny".

Summer time and the ears are messy!

Here we have a new cutie up for adoption at PALS shelter in Salem. As we check out the soon to be adopted kitties every week, we notice that during the summer, the tendencies for dermatological and ear issues are exacerbated by warm and humid weather. We have many tools at our disposal to dry up and keep the moist otitis under control during these warm weather periods.

As I age, I still need some comfort

Animal House Calls Mobile Clinic often examines dogs like Coco, who are not as agile as they once were. For such pets, many therapies have evolved from medication to hydrotherapy.
At animal house calls, we have had as pets mini dachshunds, shepherds and goldens. These are all orthopedically challenged breeds. So we acknowledge these age issues.
Coco is still doing well, but depending on surfaces and stairs and weather in a pet's environment, it may be necessary to have us evaluate pets' orthopedic status and even suggest steps to make life a bit more comfortable.

Tinker bell, the birman cat

The Birman, also called the "Sacred Cat of Burma", is a domestic cat breed. The Birman is a long-haired, colour-pointed cat distinguished by a silky coat, deep blue eyes, and contrasting white "gloves" or "socks" on each paw. The breed name is derived from Birmanie, the French form of Burma.
We saw this guy, Tinkerbell on Tuesday, and learned that after the second world war, there were hardly any of this breed remaining in Europe. In fact until they 1960s, this was not an identified breed in the USA.

Alien is looking for a great New Year bonus!

Alien is a 9 year old domestic short hair cat with a history of intermittent sinusitis and corneal lesions as a result of multiple infections from his days spent among about 50 other cats in a hoarding situation.Sinusitis is common in feline patients and we are treating him with fluid as well as antibiotics, eye meds and ophthalmic care. He is looking forward to a 2019 filled with sleeping, eating and chasing toys!

Whether we have Beagles or Dachshunds or Goldens, we soon realize pets can eat till they drop! At least some breeds act this way. We love our little sisters, the brown and pie bald one( white and brown). They never are satisfied with our menu. So, we keep it kinda boring to prevent fat little pets. Thin is best. Our efforts to prevent diabetes, arthritis and heart disease has food limitation as a first defence.

A very real question is does my pet need company, or can he or she do well by herself?
Guinea pigs or Nubian and mini goats do best in groups. Some pets do well alone.
People are social and do best in a group. Species differ.
Often, it is simply nice to have a pair like Bailey and Cooper.
We certainly enjoyed meeting this pair of characters!

Sometimes even Sadie must make a point.Sadie was not actually wearing this amazing cap when we saw her. I do however, think it makes a great point about reality and fiction. We at animal house calls in Peabody, Beverly, Wakefield or anywhere see lame pets due to arthritis, knee pathology and age related problems. Medications vary for these afflictions. Some work well and some not at all.

Some medical findings, like this very large anal abcess in Sandy, an 8 year old feline look bad but barely bother the patient. Sandy's owner for good reason was concerned, and we medicated and treated the accessed anal gland but this is a very common and not serious finding among our cat and dog patients. When a pet is gone.

We have a few tasks that are not happy. Euthanasia is one of these.
Pets do not live long lives, or certainly not as long as ours. At Animal House Calls, we suggest that at the pet's passing we leave a favorite photo, a beloved toy or bedding and even some fur from the pet. It has even become common to return a pet's ashes in attractive urns with or without "paw prints". Here is Otto or a memory of Otto who lived till a ripe old age.Otto would have loved this photo, and it is obvious from the quality of the photo that it is in fact not product of our picture taking, but a memory from the owners collection of wonderful pet photos.

Choose breeds as an informed owner.

The bull dog era! Right, we luv Bulls: English Bulls, and French Bulls and all size bulls, but remember that these pets do poorly in heat as well as excitement and exercise, so as with all decisions in life there are always some basic back story to take under consideration. The Bull dog is a great pet, but like all the breeds we choose, there are certain areas of medical concern to be considered. In the case of the bull dog, overheating, anesthesia risk and dermatological issues are paramount!

Dogs grow! Who knew? Maybe not you.......This is one of our newest patients, a 8 week Leonberger. That is correct. This is not a full grown mutt nor a 3 month old shepherd cross. This is a relatively unfamiliar breed to many of our clients. So what is our message? If you want a 200 pound son, great this is him! If you do not, then you are in very deep d_____.
Our clients the owners of the patient want them BIG!
We luv these guys and we really love their decisiveness. A german shepherd or Great dane...... not big enough, and they know what they want, having done this before. But beware, these pets require deep care devotion and FOOD!

am I drunk or do I have vestibular syndrome?

This morning we checked out this guy in Reading Mass. This older dog has been suffering from an inner ear inflamation, seen often in older pets.Of course this unsteadiness and weird way of moving about needs to be differentiated from more serious illnesses, like stroke or tumor.

Treatment is minimal, perhaps steroids as well as anti emetic meds.( vomiting). After a short period of treatment, this patient is doing well.

Jan is Animal House Calls Veterinary nurse. Hard as it is to believe, this woman has put up with the veterinarian at Animal House Calls for our 36 year history. It can be quite the veterinary job:preventing your cat from pulling out sutures, or leaving itself alone and not scratching. The famous "cone of shame" can do wonders. Ruby is a great and gentle family pet. Pit Bulls like all pets must be slowly accustomed as pups to be near people and especially children. We veterinarians see many illnesses which result in the need to remove a pet's eye. Corneal ulcerations, traumatic injuries, tumors and severe infections are not uncommon to veterinary patients.

Older cats have a varied outlook for longevity and illness.

Cosmos is in pretty good shape for 20 years old! An attentive and dedicated owner is key. Older cats need attention focused on their eating interest and ability. Kidney disease or even poor dental health can impair appetite. On the other end, dry food and poor water intake, as well as kidney disease decreases bowel movements and leads to serious constipation.

Veterinarians are in the unique position to pick up on these signs early.

With our senior cats, like Zoe who is 17, finding the litter box with accuracy is not always easy. We generally put a bigger box with a flatter and much lower rim nearer the senior feline. This increases accurate aim! Other senior cognitive conditions also occur, but often this slight moderation will help.

Do not feed excess holiday leftovers, preferably none. Remember feed the cat you want and not the cat you have. In other words, feed small low calorie food several times daily in small amounts.

Blood hounds are great pets, and this dog and his sister are owned by a police officer. These canine sleuths are famous for their ability to track humans for great distances and have been bred for tracking since at least the middle ages. Originally bred for hunting deer , wild boar , and since the Middle Ages for tracking people, the bloodhound is descended from hounds once kept at the Abbey of Saint-Hubert, Belgium . When faced with a swelling on a dog's nose, neck or back, we differentiate between bug, bee or spider bites and injury from other pets.Yesterday, Bijou paid too much attention to an insect or spider or was nipped by another dog or cat. The animal bites leave more outward trauma.The insect bites show as bumps and swelling. These can be treated with antihistamines, steroids or antibiotics. Only a severe anaphylaxis reaction is an emergency, but we usually examine all pets and make them comfortable with medication.

Benny, one of our older patients has an eyelid cyst. These are really common in elderly pets. Often owners are concerned as to the impairment of vision caused by these lesions. Cats like patient, Casey show increased drinking and urinating similar to diabetes in people. Often, there is weight loss as well. The owner will treat Casey with insulin by injections daily.

We have been seeing many diabetic pets lately. This is certainly a result of obesity and diet as it is with many humans. There is also a genetic component with certain cats and dogs.Our success with treatment is related to owners' ability to help their pets and change the diet as well.

Pets with severe underbites and other inherited attributes are common to veterinary practice.Veterinarians see pure breeds mostly with severe dental problems, however April, a boxer lab cross has an underbite of vast proportion.
There will be no braces in her future, but minor inconveniences may occur. Those front teeth are never going to meet. Grabbing food or chewing will be more challenging, but our patients receive processed pet food anyways.
We love her the way she is. In pedigree dogs, it is actually frowned upon to greatly alter benign attributes that masks genetically inheritable conditions!

King Charles Cavalier Spaniels are adorable, but is that enough? Maybe. It depends on an overall consensus of our clients. Let us phrase it this way: Adorable goes a long, long way.
The king Charles has a genetic predisposition to severe gastrointestinal, opthamalogical, and even hematologic abnormalities. Unfortunately, one of our clients has several Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, all of which suffer seizures intermittently as well. However, this spaniel is a generally family friendly pet who loves his owner and enjoys activity like a second grader!

Pekinese, pugs and boxers......in fact most short faced ( brachycephalic) breeds have a tendency to suffer from corneal irritation as well as ulcers.Recognizing the problem quickly is key as well as having veterinary treatment.Bill-lie, yup a real name for a real poke has a particularly advanced form of corneal damage. Bill-lie is 16 and otherwise very happy.Hopefully with meds as well as a cone of shame, we can save this eye.

Dahlia can not travel in a car. Well...maybe she can travel in a car, but you might not want to be in that car with her.Cats and dogs are like us in that they are often most relaxed at home. I had a chance this morning to get a up close photo of Dahlia. She is 15 and nervous in a vehicle, but great on a house call visit. In fact, for a senior citizen...she is quite the charmer!

A very bad idea is to allow your miniature dachshund, or even poodle, beagle or corgi to jump from chairs or furniture.Spinal disc disease is a true veterinary hazard in specially long backed mini breeds.When the pet is unathletic and obese it is even a more dangerous activity..to jump or fall from heights.Keep a short hassock, stool or other intermediate object to allow the pet to walk up or slowly dismount from higher surfaces.

I like pugs, but the British are bringing attention to their long history in the UK, as well as some of the breed's less impressive attributes.
There are a good many reasons not to love them. Because pugs are also one of the most inbred of all dog breeds — all 10,000-plus of Britain’s pugs are descended from just 50 animals. And it shows.

They suffer from dislocated knees, chronic stomach problems, collapsed larynxes, curvature of the spine, obesity, infected skin folds, elongated soft palates and terrible respiratory problems — hence the wheezing and rasping — bought about because of their genetically flattened faces.
But..remember these were the pets that people have loved for thousands of years in China and in Britain, for example Queen Victoria had 36 pugs.I guess she liked them more than even we do!

Catitude: The aloof attitude of cats especially around their veterinarian. Not an attitude that Sandy, a 12 year old domestic short haired cat is ashamed about.

This week Sandy had a thorough check up, more like a spring tune up! A large tumor on his flank needed a biopsy and removal. At the same time we ran some blood. This is a senior and required a dental as well. In older cats, one round of anesthesia is way better than several different anesthetic exposures.

Tank ...yes Tank is one of our many PitBull patients.You can call this breed a Staffordshire terrier or a mutt or a American bull terrier cross or even a goat.Nevertheless, we do love them especially Tank.
BUT...they have 325 pounds of pressure in their jaws. We people have about 120. This older ( distinguished) veterinarian has maybe 8 pounds in a good bite. So sometimes a muzzle or a sedative dose of one of any number of meds can be a rather great idea. That is science as opposed to gambling!

Always keep an eye on your pet's eyes. ( I love redundancy).This cat has an opacity on the cornea, but such lesions often start as small areas of shallow abrasions. In this case, there actually are some small adjacent abrasions in the dark area next to the original opaque ( whitish) lesion.

Tumors and surgery

This is a fatty mass. Many veterinarians call it a lipoma. Hey, it's a fatty mass. People get these as well. The problem is these veterinary common masses often resemble more serious cancers, and usually require a cytology exam ( needle sample) or at least a veterinary opinion.In this instance the tumor was on Biscuit, our Animal House Call Mascot. When we examine a bald area on a patient, we eliminate fungal infections ( ringworm), bacterial, as well as injury and allergy.Ringworm is a fungal organism living in the skin which may never actually cause clinical problems. When we do diagnose ringworm, treatment is usually routine. The organism is a zoonose, meaning people can be infected as well.There are many illnesses shared by all animals, including us. In the case of a zoonotic infection, we culture the organism to identify it as a precaution.

Snowy is one of our favorite patients, and also one of our itchiest. During this delayed fall season, we will be seeing a great deal of allergic and uncomfortable pets. Self irritation, biting and licking often make these suffering pets even more itchy and uncomfortable. Snowy has been getting some extra calories from chewing on her own tail. We have treated Snowy with allergy injections as well as local ointment. The next step will be to keep her away from her tail, as well as adding in additional anti itch meds.

Shelties are popular companions among veterinary clients. We advise that the sheltie is well mannered and ranked 6th among breeds for understanding voice commands and intelligence.

The breed originated as a herding dog and is a descendant of the Collie. The Sheltie is a descendant of small specimens of the Scottish Collie and the King Charles Spaniel. It was developed to tend the diminutive sheep of the Shetland Islands. Today it is raised as a farm dog and family pet. The medical issues seen with shelties often involve eye abnormalities, dermatological conditions and MDR1 GENE mutations which renders this breed at times sensitive to a variety of medications.

The shelties we see are human dependent, live a long time and are easy patients for veterinarians. Sam is a typical example, and at an advanced age is great company and always welcoming to guests and pet lovers.

Here are compared ears: On the right is Cooper’s ear which suffered from deteriorative vascular dermatitis. Part of the pinna ( ear flap) literally fell off after losing proper circulatory function.This is not an unusual condition in many mini daschunds. The pet never knew it happened. There was no pain. The Stafford is referred to as the “nanny dog” in the U.K. because of its ability to function as an able nursemaid for children. The fun-loving Staffordshire Bull Terrier also loves to play with friends and family. A pet’s mouth is an amazing place. Dogs and cats have dental and gum problems and even swellings and masses which are very tough to notice without a very close examination of the entire mouth cavity.

This week we checked one of our most loved patients and noticed a gum enlargement which was barely noticeable unless the lip is elevated.We are hopeful that Molly has epulis which is a benign gum inflammation. Such areas often require close observation and biopsy.

Teddy, one of our favorite pekinese patients has an interesting dog’s life. The Pekinese breed has a history 2000 years old, originating in Peking China.It has been hypothesized that the dog’s rolling gait may have been deliberately developed through breeding to prevent these dogs from wandering far from the royal palace where they were often favored pets.

Ancient Chinese folk lore believes the breed to have developed from the merging of a lion and a butterfly with the help of the Buddah. In truth there are several imaginary theories detailing the origins of the pekinese dog.

Teddy has a tendency to develop respiratory problems, back issues and minor dermatological and opthamalogical conditions. Overall, Teddy like most of his breed is loyal, lion hearted and active.

To know with certainty, we always suggest a culture. At times flourescence under a special diagnostic light may be helpful, but culture is the best option. In this case, the lesion actually looks similar to ringworm, but probably is simply an allergic plaque, aggravated by licking and hair loss.

Veterinarians think size matters! We house call veterinarians see many giant breeds. Examples are Great Danes, Irish Wolfhounds and today a very handsome Leonberger. Over 110 pounds qualifies as a giant breed.In 2012, 343 pounds was the record for the weight record for a dog. Zorba, an English Mastiff from the U.K. measured 8 feet long.

These giant breeds have unique characteristics. They require more space, exercise and age more rapidly than smaller breeds. Skeletal issues are the most common medical problem and require more veterinarian attention.

In the case of Luke, a Leonberger, we carefully differentiated the couch from the dog. Clients do not appreciate when veterinarians vaccinate their couch.

Indoor cats can develop ear inflammations. Aurora is a wonderful, extremely well cared for kitty. As we turn up the thermostats during late fall, pets’ bodies adapt by altering body secretions and sometimes skin becomes dry, itchy or irritated. Ear secretions increase and require removal and cleaning. Aurora develops otitis and easily has this issue remedied with conservative medical treatment and veterinary attention.

Sleeping arrangements of pets is a subject of ridicule and debate.Decisions once made are difficult to alter.Our mini dachsunds have been an added addition to bed during winter nights. Recently, however, for their own safety, they have been banished to the floor. Jumping from heights is a danger for older and certain smaller breeds.

There is no solid rule, but as always pets do best with consistency. The “sisters” are now in a very elegant pillow case, with the added option of a blanket.

I realize summer is completely over! OK, no need to push it down our throats! Nevertheless, allergies are worse than ever, especially when those heating systems kick into action and allergens are pumped thru out the home ventilation system.

Byron needed some attention to his ear and between our efforts and those of Brody, a 4 month old golden doodle, he feels much better!
